Rumbling into 2005 with the same momentum with which it
dominated 2004, the Chevy Silverado is one serious full-size
pickup truck. It is built for work, for off-road driving,
for on-road driving, for trips and for short stints. In
other words, it can do a whole lot. That's probably one
of the reasons why it was given "Best Buy" status
from Consumer Guide this year.
There are a number of upgrades spread across the diverse
2005 Chevy Silverado lineup. One such improvement affecting
the regular cab model is that front disc/rear drum antilock
brakes are standard on all models.
Available Models
The 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 regular cab is offered in
three trims: work, base and LS. 1500 extended cabs and crew
cabs, 2500s and HD models are all covered in individual
reviews.
Interior Features
The regular cab has two doors and can sit three with a front
bench seat.
Work models are bare bones, and are designed to do precisely
what their name implies. You won't be finding heated front
seats or navigation system in these models, but you will
be satisfied when a long, hard day's toiling is done.
Top-line LS models come with a nice array of standards.
Some of the names on the list include a leather-wrapped
steering wheel, heated power mirrors, power windows and
door locks, remote keyless entry, a trip computer, an automatic
day/night rearview mirror, a compass, an outside-temperature
indicator and more.
Exterior Features
Regular cab Silverado models are available with conventional
6.5 and 8.1-ft Fleetside cargo beds or a 6.5-ft flare-fender
Sportside box.
Performance
As usual, the 2005 Chevy Silverado comes with either two-wheel
drive or four-wheel drive configurations. The standard engine
with 1500 regular cabs is a 4.3-liter Vortec V6 with 195
horsepower at 4600 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.
5-speed manual transmission is standard; 4-speed automatic
is optional.
There are two optional engines available as well: a 4.8-liter
Vortec V8 with 285 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 295 lb-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm and a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 with 295
horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
The latter is offered only with 4-speed automatic transmission.
4WD 1500 models can be equipped with a special Z71 Off-Road
Package. This includes 46-mm gas-charged shock absorbers,
off-road jounce bumpers, specific stabilizer bars, a skid-plate
package, a high-capacity air cleaner and Z71 decals.
Safety and Security
Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, the
new brakes and daytime running lights.
