The makers at Chevrolet have truly done themselves proud
with the introduction of the all-new Silverado Hybrid, a
full-size pickup that begins to realize the potential of
gasoline-electric vehicles. This new Silverado loses nothing
in terms of horsepower or ability, but it does help both
your pocketbook and the environment. A definite win-win
situation, in other words.
At the heart of the 2005 Chevy Silverado Hybrid is the
use of a special electric motor that eliminates the constant
need for fuel burning. The gas engine shuts off at stoplights
to save fuel and restarts when the gas pedal is pushed.
The electric motor provides 120-volt power for running electrical
accessories.
Available Models
The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid is a sole model.
Interior Features
The Chevy Silverado Hybrid is essentially a sophisticated
version of an extended cab. As such, it can sit up to six
passengers when properly equipped.
Like other 2005 Silverados, the Hybrid features an all-electric
cooling system (compared to fan and fan clutch on 2004 models).
The all-electric cooling system consists of two 200-watt
electric fan packages and an improved dissipation radiator.
Exterior Features
The Silverado Hybrid, like other extended cab Silverados,
is available with 6.5 and 8.1-ft Fleetside cargo bed.
Performance
The 2005 Chevy Silverado Hybrid really doesn't lose anything
in the way of muscle. The specs: a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 engine
that generates up to 295 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque.
A 4-speed automatic transmission is mated to the motor for
hands-free shifting.
Instead of a conventional starter motor and alternator,
Hybrid pickups use a compact 14-kw electric induction motor
or starter generator integrated in a patented, space-efficient
manner between the engine and transmission. The starter
generator control module (SGCM) controls the starter generator's
engine cranking, torque control, speed control and torque
smoothing/active damping functions.
Also used is an engine-independent electro-hydraulic power
steering (EHPS) system, which provides variable-effort power
steering even when the engine shuts off. This conserves
even more fuel. The EHPS "powerpack" integrates
an electric motor, a hydraulic pump and an electronic control
module; it is powered by the truck's 42-volt battery pack.
The result of all this is that the Silverado Hybrid gets
great fuel ratings. 2WD models get 18/21 mpg (city/highway),
while 4WD models get 17/19 mpg (city/highway).
Safety and Security
A passenger-sensing system and dual-level airbags are an
integral part of all Silverados. The system automatically
deactivates the passenger-side front airbag under certain
conditions to help protect smaller occupants.
