Chevrolet's best-selling vehicle is a full-size pickup
that exhibits all the traits the manufacturer wants to be
known for. It is powerful, agile, versatile and durable-certainly
features you would like in a working truck.
The 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 regular cab is the entry-level
model of a vehicle that is offered in a wealth of different
configurations. It starts things off not with a putter,
but with a bang. Last year the Silverado got a fresh front
end; this year a few new models are introduced in other
categories.
Available Models
The 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 regular cab is offered in
two trims: base and LS. 1500 extended cabs and crew cabs,
2500s and HD models are all covered in individual reviews.
Interior Features
The regular cab has two doors and can sit three with a front
bench seat. While most of the attention is reserved for
the cargo bed, the interior cabin isn't forgotten by any
means.
The 2004 Chevy Silverado has an advanced multiplexed electrical
architecture that enables the driver information center
to monitor and report on as many as 34 system functions,
including service indicators for "Ice Possible"
and "Door Ajar." In other words, the driver is
at the head of the control center.
Steering-wheel controls are available, letting owners personalize
several functions and safely access infotainment options.
They also provide easy access to the OnStar system, which
is optional with LS models.
Exterior Features
Regular cab Silverado models are available with conventional
6.5 and 8.1-ft Fleetside cargo beds or a 6.5-ft flare-fender
Sportside box.
Performance
As usual, 2004 Chevy Silverados come with either two-wheel
drive or four-wheel drive configurations. The standard engine
with 1500 regular cabs is a 4.3-liter Vortec V6 with 200
horsepower at 4600 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.
5-speed manual transmission is standard; 4-speed automatic
is optional.
There are two optional engines available as well: a 4.8-liter
Vortec V8 with 285 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 295 lb-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm and a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 with 295
horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
The latter is offered only with 4-speed automatic transmission.
4WD 1500 models can be equipped with a special Z71 Off-Road
Package. This includes 46-mm gas-charged shock absorbers,
off-road jounce bumpers, specific stabilizer bars, a skid-plate
package, a high-capacity air cleaner and Z71 decals.
Safety and Security
Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, antilock
4-wheel disc brakes and daytime running lights.
