The Malibu is one of those cars that can pretty well do
anything. Of course, you're not going to take it off-road
and conquer any harsh terrain, but in terms of on-road driving,
the Malibu is as versatile as they come.
The sedan also has a nice array of helpful features. On
such feature, introduced last year, is an optional factory-installed
remote vehicle starter system. With a range of about 200
feet, it lets the driver start the car's interior heating
and cooling systems so that it's nice and comfortable before
you even open the door.
Available Models
The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu is available in a base trim, an
LS trim and an LT trim.
Interior Features
Every Malibu features a high level of standard equipment.
A power driver's seat height adjuster, tilt/telescoping
steering column, CD-equipped audio system, power windows,
door locks and mirrors are standard on all Malibus. Power
adjustable brake and accelerator pedals and manual lumbar
support are standard on LS and LT models, and available
on the base Malibu sedan.
Chevy designers know how much you like to listen to music
as you drive. Three levels of audio system offerings are
available on the Malibu, including an uplevel radio with
an in-dash, six-CD changer, six speakers (including two
tweeters on the A-pillar), automatic volume and tone controls,
and XM Satellite Radio compatibility.
Exterior Features
The Malibu and its Malibu Maxx stable-mate (covered in a
separate review) were the first North American applications
of General Motors' Epsilon global architecture, which also
provides the foundation for the Saab 9-3 and Opel Vectra.
The Epsilon body structure gives the Malibu a high degree
of structural stiffness, greatly enhancing both vehicle
handling and interior acoustics.
For 2005, Chevy offers an Exterior Appearance Package for
Malibu base sedan includes body-color side moldings, 15-inch
alloy wheels and rear spoiler.
Performance
The front-wheel drive Malibu is powered by one of two engines.
Base models are equipped with a 2.2-liter, inline 4-cylinder
Ecotec engine with 145 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 155 lb-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm. Standard on the rest of the line
and optional with base models is a 3.5-liter V6 with 200
horsepower at 5400 rpm and 220 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.
4-speed automatic transmission is standard in all models.
All Malibu models are also equipped with electric power
steering (EPS) with variable assist for low and high-speed
maneuvers.
Safety and Security
For 2005, Thorax side-impact airbags for front occupants
are standard on the Malibu LT. They are available on all
other models
