The Cobalt is an all-new premium compact car that Chevrolet
debuts in 2005 as a replacement for the soon-to-be-extinct
Cavalier. It is intended to usher in the next wave of models
in the segment, boasting comfort and a rigid body structure
that provides exceptional handling and interior quietness.
In many ways, the Cobalt is like the Cavalier. However,
it is a re-interpretation of the popular car, fit for the
next century. That is, the comfort is more refined and modern,
the handling is improved and there is an increase in power.
Available Models
Like the Cavalier, the Cobalt is offered as a sedan and
as a coupe. The sedan model features base, LS and LT trims,
while coupe models are available in base, LS, and SS Supercharged
trims. The SS will debut in mid-2005 as 2006 model.
Interior Features
Both the sedan and the coupe can sit up to five passengers.
In addition, their cargo volume is measured to be 13.9 cubic
feet. The Cobalt features plenty of interior flexibility,
including easy access to the rear seat, 60/40 folding rear
seats and interior access to the trunk area.
There are quite a few standard features spread across the
Cobalt's lineup for its debut. Some of the standards for
all include air conditioning, an electric rear defogger,
a CD player and a driver information center.
Available features include heated leather seats, a power
sunroof, XM Satellite Radio, MP3 playback and the OnStar
system.
Exterior Features
Several wheel options are offered for 2005, including standard
15-inch wheels and available 16-inch, 17-inch, and 18-inch
wheels, all with unique designs.
Performance
Cobalt features a strut-type front suspension, semi-independent
torsion beam rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer
bars for more exact body roll control. Speed sensitive electric
power steering is tuned to match the performance levels
of the various tire and suspension packages. The turning
radius measures at 34.8 feet curb-to-curb.
The Cobalt uses an Ecotec 2.2-liter inline 4-cylinder model.
It is mated to a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission or a
Hydra-Matic 4T45-E 4-speed automatic transmission, and it
generates 145 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 155 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm.
The SS will use a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that
pumps out 205 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque
at 4500 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission does the shifting.
Safety and Security
Base models use vented front disc brakes with single-piston
calipers and composite rear drum brakes. Four channel antilock
brakes (ABS) are standard on LS and LT models.
