The big news this year for the extended cab version of
the ½-ton Silverado is an optional high-output version
of the V8 engine under its hood. Customers that choose this
upgraded motor will be rewarded with a 15 horsepower increase.
On the other side of the equation is the crew cab, which
blends interior space and comfort with all the hard-working
attributes of a Chevy pickup. It benefits from the same
features that all 2005 Silverados receive, like the 3.23
rear axle ratio that is standard on 2WD models and a new
145-amp alternator.
Available Models
The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 extended cab is offered
in four trims: work, base, LS and LT. The crew cab is offered
in LS and LT trims. 1500 regular cabs, 2500s and HD models
are all covered in individual reviews.
Interior Features
Both extended cabs and crew cabs include a 3-person rear
bench seat. With a front bench seat, they can handle a total
of six passengers.
With top-line LT models, you are treated to some very fine
appointments. Some of those that help increase the comfort
are the OnStar System, leather upholstery, heated front
bucket seats, a Bose AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD
changer and steering-wheel radio controls.
Exterior Features
Extended cabs are available with 6.5 and 8.1-ft Fleetside
cargo beds. Crew Cabs come only with the short Fleetside.
An optional 6.5-ft flare-fender Sportside bed is also available.
New tire choices for 2005 include P245/70R17-108S all-season
blackwall tires as standard on 2WD models, with P245/70R17-108S
all-season white-outlined letter tires as an option. P265/70R17
all-season blackwall tires are now standard on 4WD regular
and extended cab models, while P265/70R17 all-season white
outlined-letter tires are available.
Performance
2005 Silverado 1500 extended cabs with a short bed receive
a 4.3-liter Vortec V6 with 195 horsepower at 4600 rpm and
260 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. 5-speed manual transmission
is standard; 4-speed automatic is optional.
Extended cabs with a long bed have a 4.8-liter Vortec V8
with 285 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm (optional with short bed models). All LT models,
plus crew cabs, use a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 with 295 horsepower
at 5200 rpm (310 with the upgrade) and 330 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm. It is offered only with 4-speed automatic transmission.
4WD 1500 models can be equipped with a special Z71 Off-Road
Package. This includes 46-mm gas-charged shock absorbers,
off-road jounce bumpers, specific stabilizer bars, a skid-plate
package, a high-capacity air cleaner and Z71 decals.
Safety and Security
Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, antilock
4-wheel disc brakes and daytime running lights.
