LS Colorado models are the top trim level with the sporty
midsize pickup truck. They add extra features and more standard
power to a model that is already taking the segment by storm.
The main addition this year is a new Xtreme package for
2WD models. A unique body-color front fascia with foglamps,
rear fascia and rocker extension moldings, as well as a
rear spoiler on the tailgate, new front grille and special
badging visually identify the Colorado Xtreme. Four colors
are offered: Victory Red, Black, White and Yellow.
Available Models
2005 Chevy Colorado models are offered as regular cabs,
extended cabs and, solely, as crew cabs. Base models are
covered in a separate review.
Interior Features
The 2005 Chevy Colorado regular cab seats up to three and
the extended cab, with its dual rear-hinged back doors,
can seat up to five. The four-door crew cab seats up to
six.
LS models take the base package and heap on the goods.
All versions add a modern MP3 player for digital listening
pleasure. Depending on what suspension setup you opt for,
the following features will be added: a leather-wrapped
steering wheel, front bucket seats, a center console, power
mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and
cruise control.
XM Satellite Radio and the OnStar system are LS-exclusive
options. Also available is a 6-disc CD changer and leather
upholstery (crew cabs only).
Exterior Features
Both regular cabs and extended cabs use a solid 6-ft cargo
bed. The crew cab has its own unique 5-ft bed. A bed extender,
chrome side steps and other features are optional.
Performance
The 2005 Chevy Colorado is available with rear-wheel drive
or with a 4WD system that has low-range gearing but should
not be left engaged on dry pavement. Traction control is
optional on models with 2WD.
The standard engine is a 2.8-liter inline 4-cylinder model.
It can be mated to 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
The I4 is able to muster 175 horsepower at 5600 rpm and
185 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.
The inline 5-cylinder engine that is reserved for most
LS crew cabs and is offered as an option for others definitely
ups the performance level. It produces 220 horsepower at
5600 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.
Safety and Security
Antilock brakes and daytime running lights are standard
on all 2005 Colorado models. The dual-stage airbags include
a passenger deactivation switch to reduce injury.
Curtain side airbags are standard on some LS models, optional
on others. They act like a protective curtain when deployed,
unfolding from the roof rail between the A-pillar and side
window header.
