It's one thing to brag about being a big, bad full-size
pickup truck; it's another thing to have something that
backs it. The Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 fall into the category
of the latter. Last year, Ram's Heavy Duty lineup took Motor
Trend Truck of the Year honors. But that's not all: the
Dodge Ram Heavy Duty also ranked first among heavy-duty
pickups in the J.D. Power 2003 Initial Quality Study.
The 2003 model had a major redesign, using the styling
that defined the ½-ton 1500 model the previous year.
With all these changes, it's not surprising to note that
Ram 2500 and 3500 don't see too many changes for 2004. A
new automatic transmission for the high-powered turbodiesel
engine tops the list of upgrades.
Available Models
The ¾-ton 2500 and 1-ton 3500 Ram are offered in
regular cab or Quad Cab four-door crew cab models. ST and
SLT trims are also available.
Interior Features
Regular cabs sit three up front. Quad Cabs add a three-person
bench seat to accommodate up to six.
The Quad Cab's four doors are front-hinged, all with inside
and outside handles. This makes for easier entry and exiting.
In addition, the rear doors open 85 degrees and the windows
move all the way down.
There are additional options for the 2004 model year as
well. One such option is a hands-free cell-phone link. Another
is an integrated radio/navigation system.
Exterior Features
Quad Cabs have an added three-passenger rear seat and either
a 6.3 or 8-ft cargo bed; regular cabs come with the 8-ft
bed.
Performance
There are plenty of engines to choose with 2004 Ram work
trucks, and all of them are tough. The standard powertrain
consists of a 5.7-liter V8 engine. It delivers 330 horsepower
at 5400rpm and 375lb-ft of torque at 4400rpm.
The next engine, which is available on some models, is
a 5.9-liter turbodiesel inline 6-cylinder model. It generates
250 horsepower at 2900 rpm and 460 lb-ft of torque at 1400
rpm.
As always, two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations
are available.
A new 48RE automatic transmission bolsters the capability
of the Cummins High Output Turbo Diesel engine. It now produces
305 horsepower at 2900 rpm and 555 lb-ft of torque at 1400
rpm.
Safety and Security
Dual front airbags and 4-wheel disc brakes with antilock
rear brakes are standard. The Laramie package includes front
and rear antilock brakes, while curtain side airbags are
optional.
