Last year, Dodge gave its favorite child a new 5.7-liter
HEMI engine to play with, making it a king in the full-size
pickup truck class. The sheer abundance of power gave the
already rugged and practical truck an edge in the ever-competitive
workhorse segment.
This year, wider availability of a 6-speed manual transmission
and an optional sunroof highlight the changes to the pickup
king.
Available Models
The 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 is offered in two body styles: a
two-door regular cab and a Quad Cab four-door crew cab.
Both come in ST and uplevel SLT trims with cargo beds of
6.3 ft or 8 ft. There's also a top-line Laramie package
as well.
Interior Features
Regular cabs sit three, while Quad Cabs handle six. Both
are as rugged as they come.
The Laramie package turns the Dodge Ram from a comfortable
pickup to a decadent one. It has high contrast color seat
inserts in addition to a feature list that includes the
following: leather upholstery, dual-zone manual climate
controls, an Infinity AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD
changer, steering-wheel radio controls and a trip computer.
Other options for 2005 include power adjustable pedals,
Chrysler's UConnect system, heated front seats, a navigation
system and more.
Exterior Features
The new sunroof provides one-touch open-and-close features,
and includes a power vent position for highway cruising.
Also new for 2005 is rear badging, reinforcing the view
most often seen by the competition. It has a new chrome
Ram's head added to the center of the tailgate replacing
the Dodge nameplate.
Performance
There are three engines offered for 2005. The base model
is a 3.7-liter V6. It delivers 215 horsepower at 5200 rpm
and 235 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The second engine is
a tough 4.7-liter V8, producing 235 horsepower at 4800 rpm
and 300 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.
Finally, there's the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine. It cranks
out a whopping 345 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 375 lb-ft
of torque at 4200 rpm. A unique 5-speed automatic transmission
is standard with the HEMI-the only transmission in its class
with the reverse gear ratio equal to the low gear ratio.
All Dodge Ram 1500s are available with rear-wheel drive
or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement. SLT models
now offer all-wheel drive as well.
Safety and Security
Dual front airbags and 4-wheel disc brakes with antilock
rear brakes are standard. The Laramie package includes front
and rear antilock brakes, while curtain side airbags are
optional.
