There are followers and there are leaders in life. The
2005 Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan - a larger, roomier
version of the same vehicle-are definitely members of the
former class.
The numbers don't lie: the Caravan has been the best-selling
minivan for the last 20 years. Political leaders, fashions,
TV shows, trends, weather patterns-all these have come and
gone, and still the Caravan reigns supreme. More than 10
million sales later, Dodge Caravan remains the leader in
the minivan market segment.
There are a number of safety upgrades to this year's lineup
of Caravans and Grand Caravans. The Caravan gets a new standard
driver knee airbag for 2005. Now available are head-protecting
curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows;
they replace front side airbags. A tire-inflation monitor
is also available.
Available Models
2005 Dodge Caravans and Grand Caravans are offered in SE
and SXT trims.
Interior Features
Both Caravan sizes seat seven passengers. Regular-length
Caravans offer a spacious 146.7 cubic feet of storage room,
while the Grand Caravan does even better with 167.9 cubic
feet of space.
New this year is Stow 'n Go seating. The minivan-first
seating and storage system not only provides the industry's
only fold-in-the-floor second- and third-row seats, but
also gives an additional 12 cubic feet of storage area when
the seats are in their upright position. The seating configuration
goes from seven seats to two in less than 30 seconds, with
a one-hand operation.
For options, there's UConnect, power-adjustable pedals,
a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a navigation system.
Exterior Features
There are a number of optional features that add to the
functionality of the Caravan. Among them are a roof rack,
a power liftgate and a power sliding passenger rear door.
Performance
Three capable engines are retained from 2004. Base Caravan
SE models use a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with
150 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. They, like other
Caravan trims, use a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Uplevel Caravan models and base Grand Caravans are fitted
with a 3.3-liter V6 engine. It is capable of producing up
to 180 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque.
Finally, Grand Caravan SXT models have a 3.8-liter V6 engine
that will churn out with 215 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of
torque.
Safety and Security
The 2005 Caravan is equipped with an antilock braking system
that uses electronic sensors to prevent wheel lockup. It
also has front crash sensors that measure the severity of
an impact and relay crash information to safety systems
in the occupant compartment.
