The 2003 Toyota Camry has been redesigned in response to
the attributes perceived as most valued by the sedan-buying
public; room, comfort, performance, safety and quality.
A larger version, with a two-inch longer wheelbase, wider
body and taller passenger area than its predecessor and,
the new Toyota Camry gives a sense of openness and has more
interior space.
In combination with this, the 2003 Toyota Camry offers
extensive interior amenity with rising luxury levels according
to the model. For example, the SE and LE models now have
a standard-equipped remote keyless entry system. A 6-CD-changer
adds to the JBL 3-in-1 audio system on the XLE's standard
equipment list.
Available Models
The 2003 Toyota Camry has three models that are available
with either a 4-cylinder or V6 engine. The LE is the base
model while the SE is a sport-oriented version and the XLE
and luxury-oriented one.
Interior Features
The 2003 Toyota Camry has different selections of features
depending on which model you have chosen, as is briefly
touched upon above. What is standard throughout the line
of cars is a high base standard of interior comfort. Highlights
of the different models are as follows.
The base LE has a multi-information display, located just
above the audio system, integrating a seatbelt warning light,
clock and outside temperature gauge. The XLE takes this
further with a steering-wheel-button-controlled display
featuring current and average fuel economy, remaining driving
range, average speed, elapsed trip time and driving time.
The driver selects the display items with switches Controls
on the steering wheel center pad.
An optional navigation system has mapping for the US and
Canada on one DVD. Multi-language selection, route preview,
simplified highway junction graphics, a dual-map screen
mode and five second multi-route calculation add value to
this powerful tool.
The Camry LE and SE grades come standard with a deluxe
3-in-1 AM/FM/cassette/CD audio system with six speakers
is standard on all models but the XLE gets the previously
mentioned JBL, an optional extra on LE and SE grades.
Exterior Features
This year sees a continuation of the classic styling of
the 2003 Toyota Camry, albeit on a vehicle with slightly
larger dimensions. Notably, the sport SE model has some
rakish exterior styling that conveys a heightened sense
of speed. It has its own black-out grill, black headlamp
masking, integrated fog lamps, a rear spoiler and unique
black pearl badging with chrome logos. The XLE also has
the fog lamps this year and all models have alloy wheels.
Performance
A double overhead-cam 2.4-liter four-cylinder VVT-i engine
powers the Camry. It generates 157 hp at 5,600 rpm and 162
lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The SE and LE grades
come with a 5-speed manual transmission but a sophisticated
electronic automatic with intelligence (4ECTi) transmission
is available, and is standard equipment on the XLE. The
"intelligence" is grade logic that selects the
proper gear for ascending and descending inclines. They
both get similar mileage ratings, with approx 23/32 mpg
(city/hwy).
An optional 3.0-liter V6 is available for the Camry line.
This powerplant produces 192 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and
209 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,400 rpm and is compatible
with the 4ECTi only. A V6 Camry gets 20/28 mpg.
Safety and Security
The Camry has advanced Toyota safety with an comprehensive
restraint system, and on the V6 models, option vehicle skid
control with brake assist. Standard on the XLE, optional
on the other two models, a sophisticated four-sensor, four-channel
anti-lock (ABS) four-wheel disc brakes and an electronic
brake force distribution (EBD) feature is in place. This
system optimizes braking pressure at each wheel to ensure
stability under hard braking, especially while cornering.
2003 Toyota Camry Highlights
More
Room and Comfort, Less Noise. The fifth-generation
Camry rides on a two-inch longer wheelbase than the
previous model, contributing to a 1.5-inch gain in
rear seat legroom. The Camry is also wider and taller
than before, resulting in larger interior packaging
with a greater sense of openness. A super-low 0.28
coefficient of drag (Cd) translates into less wind
noise than ever, and foam-packed A, B- and C-pillars
also help reduce wind noise.
A
multi-information display, located just above the
audio system, integrates a seatbelt warning light,
clock and outside temperature gauge on LE and SE grades.
The XLE display features current and average fuel
economy, remaining driving range, average speed, elapsed
trip time and driving time. The driver selects the
display items with switches on the steering wheel
center pad.
The
optional navigation system stores the mapping for
the contiguous United States and major Canadian cities
on one digital versatile disc (DVD). This system provides
very fast route calculation (about five seconds) and
includes multi-language selection. Major functions
include multi-route calculation, route preview, simplified
highway junction graphics and a dual-map screen mode.
New
optional power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals
(with automatic transmission only) that allow all
drivers to more comfortably position their seats relative
to the steering wheel.
