For 2003, Mazda has replaced its 626 with the five-seater
Mazda6. This sporty yet practical sedan is larger and more
powerful than its predecessor. It is also arguably more
fun to drive, with its lively feel, and agile cornering
abilities. Also well equipped, it fits Mazda's "zoom-zoom"
image perfectly.
Available Models
The 2003 Mazda6 is available in the i model and the s model.
The i model comes with a 4-cylinder engine, while the s
model contains a V6 engine. On both models, 5-speed manual
transmission is standard, but automatic transmission is
available. For the i model, the automatic transmission is
4-speed, and for the s model, it is 5-speed. Both offer
a manual shift gate.
Interior Features
Interior features on both models of the new 2003 Mazda6
include cruise control, power steering, a tilt/telescopic
steering wheel with radio controls, power door locks, mirrors,
and windows, and air conditioning. Other standard features
on this sedan are a tachometer, a digital clock, an AM/FM/CD
player, and illuminated visor mirrors. The s model also
adds an 8-way power driver seat, and automatic climate control
to its standard interior features.
The 2003 Mazda6 beats many of its rivals by providing a
roomy rear seat that can effortlessly accommodate three
adults. It also offers ample cargo room, especially through
its handy split folding rear seat.
Exterior Features
Both models of the 2003 Mazda6 come equipped with 16-inch
wheels, and automatic-off headlights. The wheels on the
s models are alloy. All models can be furnished with the
Sport Package, which adds a rear spoiler, body cladding,
17-inch wheels, and dual exhaust outlets.
Performance
The 2003 Mazda6 i model houses a 2.3-litre dohc 4-cylinder
engine, that produces 160 hp at 6000 rpm, and 155 lbs-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm. The s model contains a 3.0-litre
V6 engine, that delivers 220 hp at 6300 rpm, and 192 lbs-ft
of torque at 5000 rpm. The 5-speed manual transmission models
have a fuel rating of 25/32 mpg (city/highway) and 20/27
mpg for the i and s models respectively. The 4-speed automatic
transmission version does 23/29 mpg, while the s model equipped
with 5-speed automatic transmission does 19/27 mpg.
Safety and Security
For safety, all Mazda6 models come equipped with dual front
airbags, and emergency inside trunk release. The i model
is provided with 4-wheel disc brakes, while the s model
is upgraded to 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes.
