For 2003, Mazda decided to release a limited-edition version
of the Protege, their winning subcompact sedan that has
been moving steadily up the consumer rankings the past two
years. This limited-edition version, the 2003 MAZDASPEED
Protege, is a high-performance model which contains a turbocharged
adaptation of the standard Protege's 4-cylinder engine.
This special engine allows the MAZDASPEED Protege to achieve
a power regular Protege drivers can only wish for. Playing
along with the sporty image, Mazda designers have also incorporated
unique sport suspension with 17-inch wheels, and trim extras
both inside and outside this car. The result? A sedan that
provides super value for money.
Available Models
The 2003 MAZDASPEED Protege is a 4-door sedan with features
like anti-lock brakes and a limited-slip differential provided
as standard. As with the regular Protégés,
there are a number of options packages available as well.
Interior Features
The interior features of the 2003 MAZDASPEED Protege are
designed to add to its appeal. A Kenwood AM/FM/CD/MP3 player
is standard, as is a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The
MAZDASPEED Protege also incorporates all the standard features
that are a part of the regular edition Protege. These include
front bucket seats, power steering, map lights, a split
folding rear seat, air conditioning, and cruise control.
There is also a height-adjustable driver seat, power locks,
doors, and windows, a remote entry system, and a tachometer.
Options available to complete the MAZDASPEED's interior
include a cargo net. The head room and leg space in this
car rival the regular Protege's, as does the accessibility
of its rear seat.
Exterior Features
This limited-edition Protege features 17-inch alloy wheels
fitted with low-profile Bridgestone tires. Fog lights and
a rear spoiler are standard, adding to the MAZDASPEED's
sporty appeal.
Performance
The turbocharged version of the standard Protégé's
2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine means that the 2003 MAZDASPEED
Protege can give out 170 hp at 6000 rpm versus 130 hp for
the standard version. The MAZDASPEED also offers 160 lbs-ft
of torque at 3500 rpm. Available in 5-speed manual transmission,
it offers great fuel economy as well as a solid feel, and
enviable cornering ability.
Safety and Security
Safety and security on the 2003 MAZDASPEED Protege go one
above the regular Mazda Protege. A theft-deterrent system
with alarm is standard, as are anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes.
It also contains dual front airbags.
