The Chevy Silverado 2500HD adds an extra set of heavy-duty
capabilities to the already able 2500 model. The result
is an extremely rugged full-size pickup truck that is made
for work, while also offering passengers and drivers a nicely
laid out interior filled with standard features to ensure
their comfort. However, as its name suggests, this big pickup
is constructed first and foremost with labor in mind, including
towing, hauling, and transporting the heaviest loads in
the toughest conditions.
Available Models
The 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is available in regular
cab (with an 8.1-ft. long box), extended cab (with an 6.5-ft.
short box or long box) and crew cab (with either the short
box or long box) body sizes. In addition, a chassis cab
is also available on the regular, extended and crew cab
sizes. LS denotes the base model, while the LT is considered
the uplevel model.
Interior Features
The regular cab seats two/three passengers (two-door), while
the four-door extended (back half-doors) and crew cabs (full
back doors) seat up to six. LS models are equipped with
the following standard features and then some: air conditioning
with dual-zone manual climate control, power steering, tilt
steering wheel and vinyl upholstery. Uplevel LT models (not
offered with the regular cab) provide the OnStar system,
leather upholstery and heated front buckets seats.
OnStar is a communications and assistance service designed
to provide drivers, at any time, with access to live, personalized
service and emergency assistance at the touch of a button.
As just part of the system, customers can use OnStar for
hands-free personal calling or can have e-mail read to them.
Exterior Features
The Silverado looks tough and it acts tough. When you see
a 2500HD model rolling down the road, you know it means
business. The aforementioned cargo bed sizes provide plenty
of diversity in terms of the pickup's exterior dimensions.
Performance
Understanding the varied needs of its customers is the mark
of a good company, and Chevrolet is nothing if not in-tune
with its pickup owners. With this in mind, they offer a
number of different engines for the 2500HD series. The base
engine is a Vortec 6.0-liter V8 with 300 horsepower at 4400
rpm and 360 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Of course, 2WD
and 4WD configurations are available, and a handling and
trailering package also comes standard - anything else would
be a shock. 5-speed manual transmission is the base configuration,
though 4-and 5-speed automatic and 6-speed manual are all
optional.
There are two engines to upgrade two. The first is a Vortec
8.1-liter V8 that produces 340 horsepower at 4200 rpm and
455 lb-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm. The second is a Duramax
6.6-liter diesel V8 with 300 horsepower at 3100 rpm and
520 lb-ft. of torque at 1800 rpm. If these guys can't get
it done, you really are in trouble.
Safety and Security
The 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is equipped with dual front
airbags, a power Hydro-boost brake-apply system (four-wheel
disc, four-wheel antilock brakes) and daytime running lights.
The airbag system features a passenger-side deactivation
switch on regular and extended cab models to protect small
occupants.
