The Vibe is easily the most versatile vehicle in the Pontiac
stable. After all, it is one of the most versatile models
on the road. It has a breakthrough design that puts it somewhere
between a sport hatchback, a sports car and an SUV. If only
it would just make up its mind and choose a segment.
Officially, the 2004 Pontiac Vibe is a compact car, though
one look at it will leave you scratching your head as to
how this happened. Roomy and practical, the Pontiac Vibe
is perfect for people who want a smaller vehicle but who
also require a lot of cargo space. New for 2004 is a group
of dealer-installed accessories addressing both appearance
and performance.
Available Models
The 2004 Pontiac Vibe is offered in two models: base and
GT.
Interior Features
The interior of the 2004 Pontiac Vibe is perhaps the biggest
selling point of all. The four-door car can seat five people
with ease-it's the spaciousness that sets it apart. With
one touch the rear seats fold flat, creating a level load
floor and 54.1 cubic feet of cargo volume.
The 2004 Pontiac Vibe is practical and innovative. You
can have one with a DVD-based navigation screen, while the
center console contains two cupholders, a small covered
storage bin, a larger covered lower bin under the console
lid, a cell phone holder and a coinholder.
The standard sound system features an AM/FM stereo with
CD player, programmable equalizer, TheftLock, Radio Data
System and four speakers. XM Satellite Radio is an option
that provides up to 100 coast-to-coast digital channels
at a very reasonable price.
Exterior Features
The design of the Vibe is nothing short of unique. It features
an integrated roof rack with traditional Pontiac styling
cues like "cat-eye" headlamps and a wide, muscular
stance.
Performance
Base models are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel
drive; uplevel GT models only come in front-wheel drive.
The base engine is a 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder model with
variable-valve timing. FWD models produce 130 horsepower
and 125 lb-ft of torque; AWD models have 123 horsepower
and 118 lb-ft of torque.
GT models use the same size engine, but with specs of 180
horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque.
For 2004, a dealer-installed supercharger kit is available.
With it, the Vibe gains 7.5 pounds of engine boost and an
approximately 35-percent increase in horsepower and torque.
Safety and Security
The 2004 Pontiac Vibe features a large safety cage and crumple
zones, while antilock brakes are standard with AWD and GT
models. They are optional with the base model.
