The legendary Mazda roadster enters 2002 with a series
of pleasant upgrades in the area of performance. The sporty
look and feel remains the same, with the spirited character
of the Miata shining through.
Available Models
Two models are offered for 2002 - the Mazda Miata
Roadster and the Mazda Miata LS Roadster - bearing marked
differences in the luxury department.
Interior Features
The base model Miata Roadster boasts a broad
collection of amenities that include power windows, leather-wrapped
steering wheel, air conditioning, and an AM/FM stereo with
CD player and four speakers. Building on this package, the
Miata LS Roadster makes key additions such as tan leather
upholstery to the contoured high back seats, cruise control,
power door locks, a remote keyless entry system, chrome
inside door handles, and a powerful 200-watt Bose AM/FM
stereo with CD player.
Exterior Features
Both models sport a retractable convertible top,
with the LS model featuring a tan top. The base model starts
off with dual power outside mirrors, five-spoke fifteen-inch
alloy wheels, wind blocker, and front fog lights. The Miata
LS Roadster again picks up at this point and adds sixteen-inch
alloy wheels.
A visual overhaul was made to the front fascia this year,
including headlights with projector beams and multi-surface
reflectors, and an eye-catching five-point grille.
Performance
Under the hood of the gritty little Miata is
a 1.8-litre, SOHC, four-cylinder engine that produces 142
horsepower and 125 lbs-ft of torque. New for 2002 are improvements
to the variable valve timing, a more rigid chassis, and
a finely-tuned front and rear suspension for precision handling.
The fuel consumption rating checks in at approximately
23/28 mpg (city/hwy), and the standard transmission is five-speed
manual. A fun six-speed manual transmission or four-speed
automatic transmission are available as options on the LS
model.
Safety and Security
Each Mazda Miata Roadster is built with standard
safety equipment that includes a driver depowered air bag,
passenger depowered air bag, front and rear crumples zones,
side impact door beams, and three-point seatbelts. Each
vehicle comes with a three-year roadside assistance program.
