Volvo's innovative premium midsize SUV was first introduced
in 2003. It allowed the manufacturer to present its own
view of what sport utility vehicle should offer. What resulted
is an upscale model that lacks nothing in the way of drivability,
and has a safety package that is second to none.
One of the most appealing things about the 2004 Volvo XC90
is the way in which it handles. This can be attributed to
the P2 large-car platform it uses, which it shares with
Volvo's flagship S80 sedan. Taking corners with ease and
making parking a snap, the Volvo XC90 is quite at home in
the busy city.
Available Models
The 2004 Volvo XC90 is offered in two models: 2.5T and T6
AWD.
Interior Features
The 2004 Volvo XC90 is a large, four-door midsize sport
utility vehicle that can easily handle five passengers.
93.2 cubic feet of cargo volume is at your disposal.
The term innovative is justly applied to the XC90, as it
has five automotive firsts: Roll Stability Control (RSC),
an inflatable side curtain airbag for all three rows of
seats, an integrated sliding center booster seat for children,
seatbelts with pretensioners in all seating positions and
the availability of a Dolby 5.1 Pro Logic II surround sound
stereo system with a 305-watt Alpine amplifier and 12 premium
speakers.
The options for 2004 include a rear-seat DVD player, a
rear-obstacle detection system, a navigation system and
more.
Exterior Features
The 2004 Volvo XC90's 17-inch wheels get a fresh styling
update for the new model year. Shoppers can also choose
optional 18-inch wheels.
Performance
The base 2.5T model has a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline
5-cylinder model. It produces 208 horsepower at 5000 rpm
and 236 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm.
Top-line Volvo XC 90 T6 AWD models use a 2.9-liter turbocharged
inline 6-cylinder engine that cranks out 268 horsepower
at 5200 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm.
Both models feature automatic transmissions with a manual
shift gate. The 2.5T gets a 5-speed system and the T6 AWD
gets a 4-speed setup.
T6 AWD models have standard all-wheel drive, while 2.5T
versions can upgrade from front-wheel drive to all-wheel
drive.
Safety and Security
Like all Volvos, the 2004 XC90 is covered from head to toe
with safety equipment. Standard features include traction
control, dual front airbags, front side airbags, front and
second-row curtain side airbags, antilock 4-wheel brakes
and a rollover protection system with an antiskid feature.
