Being at the top of a full model lineup means you are complete
with premium appointments and performance features. It also
means you are often privy to new packages. So it is with
the 2004 Ford Escape XLT and Limited trims. The XLT model
offers two handy appearance packages, while the top-line
Limited has a new comfort package for even more goods.
The compact Escape uses a unibody construction that allows
it to handle more like a coupe than a sport utility vehicle.
However, when you take to the trails, you'll be glad it
isn't a coupe.
Available Models
The top half of the 2004 Ford Escape lineup consists of
XLT and Limited models. Escape XLS Value and XLS are covered
in a separate review.
Interior Features
The 2004 Ford Escape has four doors and a rear lift-gate
with flip-up glass for access to the cargo area. The cargo
area, with the seats up, offers 33 cubic feet of storage
space.
The new Limited package combines luxury with an atypically
affordable price. It features a monochromatic exterior appearance
and front and rear leather seats along with an auto-dimming
rearview mirror, dual sunvisors with illuminated mirrors
and an AM/FM six-disc, in-dash audio system.
With the Limited model, the optional comfort package includes
a rear-obstacle-detection system, heated front seats and
mirrors and a Mach sound system.
Exterior Features
XLT models offer a No Boundaries Package for 2004. It features
a No Boundaries roof rack, trailer towing class II, 16-inch
sport aluminum wheels, P235/70R16 A/T OWL tires and step
bars. If you want to go off-roading, this model certainly
looks the part.
Performance
Both XLT and Limited models use a 3.0-liter V6 engine with
201 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 196 lb-ft of torque at 4700
rpm. It is mated to a smooth 4-speed automatic transaxle.
2004 Escapes can be configured with front-wheel drive or
a full-time four-wheel drive system. It lets the driver
choose two different settings: 4x4 Auto or 4x4 ON. Two-wheel
drive models get 25 mpg (city/highway), while automatics
get 18/23 mpg (city/highway).
The Escape rolls over bumps quite easily, or it lets you
steer clear of them. MacPherson strut front suspension helps
isolate road forces, while the independent rear suspension
provides a smooth ride.
Safety and Security
Dual front airbags, automatic-off headlights and antilock
brakes are standard. Limited models add front side airbags,
which are optional on XLT models.
