In the world of the crossover vehicle there are leaders,
and then there are followers. With the 2004 Buick Buick
Rendezvous, a spot is reserved in the former group. As a
sports touring vehicle, the 2004 Buick Rendezvous is an
agile urban commando, a back-woods trailblazer and a smooth
highway performer at once. To say that this vehicle is versatile
is doing it quite a disservice.
The big news for 2004 is the introduction of a Rendezvous
Ultra, a model infused with more power and standard features
than other Rendezvous models (Rendezvous Ultra covered in
a separate review).
Available Models
The 2004 Buick Rendezvous is offered in three models: CX,
CXL and the aforementioned Ultra (covered separately).
Interior Features
The four-door Buick Rendezvous wagon has plenty of interior
space. With three rows of seating, it can accommodate up
to seven passengers. For transporting goods, the Rendezvous
has a massive 108.9 cubic feet of cargo volume.
The 2004 Buick Rendezvous is very well equipped. In addition
to such standards as air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD player
and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, the 2004 model also
offers a few new interior colors and features. Light Neutral
replaces oak, while chrome trim accents, color-keyed door
switches and leather seats in new monotone finish further
refine the interior.
A GPS navigation radio is available for the first time
this year. Other options include a power sunroof and heated
front seats (CXL models).
Exterior Features
Dark Steel Blue Metallic is a new exterior color. If you
think the Buick Rendezvous looks a little like the Pontiac
Aztek, you've got a good eye. The Rendezvous shares the
same basic structure as the Aztek, but adds four inches.
Performance
Performance is one of the key areas manufacturers focused
on when designing the 2004 Buick Rendezvous. CX and CXL
models are given a 3.4-liter V6 engine with 185 horsepower
at 5200 rpm and 210 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 4-speed
automatic transmission does the shifting.
The Buick Rendezvous comes with either all-wheel drive
or front-wheel drive. The choice is yours. All Rendezvous
models handle well thanks to an innovative short-and-long-arm
independent rear suspension.
For 2004, CXL models will dip into the Ultra's power by
offering its engine as an option. If chosen, they will have
a 3.6-liter VVT (variable valve timing) V6 with 245 horsepower
at 6000 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.
Safety and Security
Safety appointments include standard front and optional
side airbags with advanced inflation characteristics for
front-seat passengers, a safety-cage construction and available
four-wheel disc antilock brakes.
