Along with the Legacy model, the Outback is part of Subaru's
best-selling group of wagons and sedans. The key to any
Subaru vehicle is the standard all-wheel drive system, and
the Outback exemplifies the precision handling and security
that results from using AWD. Aside from handling superbly,
the Outback sedan is also generously appointed with comfort
features and a sleek style that cannot be denied. As it
effortlessly rolls down the road, drivers are sure to feel
the peace of mind that comes with an advanced security system
and a sense of pride that accompanies such a smooth ride.
Available Models
The 2003 Subaru Outback sedan is offered in three model
trims: Limited, H6-3.0 and VDC. In addition to the Subaru
Outback sedan, there is also the traditional wagon configuration,
which also contains the brand-new Baja crossover vehicle
(these are covered in a separate review).
Interior Features
The Outback sedan has four doors and seats five passengers
comfortably. The Limited trim level offers air conditioning,
cruise control, AM/FM CD player, power everything and more.
The lushness of a leather interior is standard, as well
as a power sunroof and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer to maximize
your listening pleasure.
Other features that are spread across the upper reaches
of the Outback sedan lineup include an upgraded sound system,
the OnStar system and automatic climate control. And then
there's the options list.
Exterior Features
While the Outback sedan is perhaps not quite as recognizable
as the wagon body style, it is nevertheless an aerodynamically
contoured vehicle. An all-weather package ensures that the
Outback sedan won't be finding itself stuck in the snow
anytime soon.
Performance
The Limited trim level comes with a separate engine than
the rest of the sedan lineup. Under its hood is a horizontally
opposed 2.5-liter model capable of 165 horsepower at 5600
rpm and 166 lb-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. With the other
trims the power is taken up a few notches. The engine responsible
for this is a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder model that dishes out
212 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 210 lb-ft. of torque at 4000
rpm.
All sedan models come with 4-speed automatic transmission.
Safety and Security
The Outback sedan is one of the safer vehicles on the road.
In addition to all-wheel drive, all models have dual front
airbags, front side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes
and daytime running lights.
Top-line VDC models also feature standard traction control
and a sophisticated antiskid system.
