The Ion Red Line was first distributed as an interim 2004
model. Inspired by the "tuner" cars popularized
in southern California, the Red Line takes the regular Ion's
engine and supercharges it for extreme performance ability.
It also reworks the look and feel of the quad coupe.
The Ion Red Line's inclusion in the Saturn family has easily
re-positioned the brand from one known solely for value
and a certain honest-to-goodness quirkiness to one that
can sit up at the table with the other automotive heavyweights.
With the Ion Red Line, you have flare and you have speed,
and as a driver you have exhilaration.
Available Models
The 2005 Saturn Ion Red Line is offered in one trim.
Interior Features
As a quad coupe, the Red Line has two doors and seats four.
It also has 14.2 cubic feet of cargo room, but that's not
the real reason people buy them.
Standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel,
cruise control, power mirrors and windows, remote keyless
entry, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player and automatic headlights.
For added comfort, Saturn gives the Ion Red Line leather-trimmed
RECARO sport front seats. A power sunroof is optional.
Exterior Features
On the outside, there is no doubt that the Ion Red Line
gets noticed. It has 17-inch, five-spoke forged alloy wheels
coupled with Continental 215/45-series performance tires.
It also rides lower than regular Ions, and it has a high-flow,
performance-tuned exhaust system. To top it off, there are
unique front and rear fascias, rocker moldings and a family
of available rear wings.
Performance
However, it is the performance of the Red Line that sets
it apart. Compared to other Saturns, it has a beefier drive
axle, equal-length drive shafts and racetrack-bred suspension
tuning, including revised springs, shocks, bushings and
stabilizer bars. In other words, it simply glides over the
pavement.
The heart of the 2005 Saturn Ion Red Line is a 2.0-liter
supercharged/intercooled Ecotec inline 4-cylinder engine.
It produces an estimated 205 horsepower at 5600 rpm and
200 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. Mated to this is a heavy-duty
Getrag 5-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter.
Get this: to demonstrate the performance ability of the
Ion Red Line, Saturn and GM's Performance Division took
the coupe to the Bonneville Salt Flats on Oct. 17, 2003.
There, the Red Line established a new land speed mark record
in the G/Blown Fuel Altered class at 212.684 mph.
Safety and Security
The 2005 Saturn Ion Red Line has dual front airbags and
antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. Curtain side airbags are optional.
