A redesign is almost always a good thing for buyers who happen to be interested in a model for a particular year. It is a time when manufacturers really upgrade major aspects of a vehicle, from performance and comfort all the way to safety and security.

That's exactly what happens with the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There are new engines, new 4WD systems, a revised interior, an upgraded exterior appearance, more safety equipment and better handling components. Yes, it is a good time to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Available Models
The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is a sole model. The Limited is covered in a separate review.

Interior Features
The new interior includes a rich two-tone instrument panel, new door trims and upscale interior finishes. The cargo area features a new reversible load floor panel that is carpeted on one side and offers easy-to-clean plastic on the other.

For standard features, the entry-level Laredo gets air conditioning, an 8-way power driver seat, a center console, power everything, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/CD player, a digital clock and a trip computer.
Topping the options list are a power sunroof, rear-obstacle detection, satellite radio and an infotainment group. It includes a DVD player and an in-dash 6-disc CD/MP3 changer or navigation system.

Exterior Features
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is now quieter than ever. The hood, air dam and exterior mirrors were developed in a wind tunnel to minimize wind noise and improve aerodynamics.

Performance
The entire range of performance has been upgraded for 2005. The new features include: three new full-time four-wheel drive systems, two new engines, two new transfer cases, an all-new suspension, rack and pinion steering for the first time and an all-new five-speed automatic transmission.

The new standard powertrain is a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 210 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

Optional this year is a 4.7-liter V6 engine. It adds a big dose of muscle in the form of 230 horsepower at 4700 rpm and 290 lb-ft of torque at 3700 rpm.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokees can be purchased with rear-wheel drive or with one of two all-wheel drive systems: Quadra-Trac or Quadra-Drive. The former employs a new transfer case and Throttle Anticipate, which takes steps to maximize traction before tire slippage even occurs. The latter also includes limited-slip differentials.

Safety and Security
Dual front airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. Curtain side airbags and an antiskid system (AWD models) are optional.
