Visit Toyota for more information on the Toyota Tacoma.

There isn't much change to Toyota's highly-touted compact pickup truck. The 2004 model basically returns with everything that made it a standout last year. About the only piece of news worth reporting is that the 2004 Toyota Tacoma loses an optional flare-fender StepSide cargo box.

The lineup continues unabated from last year. The 2004 Toyota Tacoma is offered as two-door regular-cabs, extended Xtracab models and crew-type Double Cabs. These have four conventional side doors, plus a three-passenger rear bench seat. Xtracabs have two forward-facing rear jump seats.

Variety is one of the main selling points of the 2004 Toyota Tacoma - along with ruggedness, reliability and versatility. There are a total of six options packages available for 2004. And that doesn't include the numerous stand-alone options.

Available Models
There are seemingly countless Toyota Tacoma models offered. In addition to the three cab sizes and options packages, there are base and PreRunner trims, an S-Runner Xtracab and a top-line 4WD Double Cab.

Interior Features
Regular cabs have a front bench seat that lets them sit up to six. Xtracabs and Double Cabs can hold five passengers.

When speaking of interior features with the Toyota Tacoma, it's not what's standard that's important, but what's available. The Limited Package, offered with uplevel V6 models, includes such things as power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/cassette/CD player, a digital clock and more.

Stand-alone options for 2004 include air conditioning and cruise control for base models, a security system and the CD player.

Exterior Features
The aforementioned Limited package also contains chrome power mirrors and color-keyed bumpers and grille. From the options list, you can add a bed extender, a tonneau cover, tubular side steps and running boards.

Performance
The 2004 Toyota Tacoma comes with rear-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive system that must be disengaged on dry pavement but has low-range gearing. Limited-slip rear differential is optional for 4WD V6 models and PreRunner V6 models.

There are three engines for 2004. The base model uses a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. It puts out 142 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 160 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

The other I4 driving the 2004 Toyota Tacoma is a 2.7-liter model with 150 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

Leading the class for 2004 is a tough 3.4-liter V6 engine. It will get you up to 190 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 220 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.

Safety and Security
Antilock brakes are standard on all Toyota Tacomas. Daytime running lights are optional.
