The Yukon has become the full-size SUV segment's fastest
growing vehicle family, in part because of its spacious
seating and tested performance features. The other part
has to do with the Yukon's blend of comfort, safety and
style. The third part, perhaps most important, is the devotion
of Yukon owners. Word of Yukon's appeal has spread quickly,
and manufacturers certainly provide enough reasons for new
and returning customers to experience what all the fuss
is about.
Available Models
There is only one base model with the Yukon, offered in
2WD and 4WD configurations, yet it is filled with features
addressing all aspects of driving, from power to convenience.
However, the entire Yukon line offers XL models for added
beef and Denali models for supreme luxury.
Interior Features
With up to nine passengers, the Yukon pushes the family
vehicle where it never thought possible. There is extraordinary
roominess inside the Yukon, as the trunk is large enough
to store whatever can't fit up front. The 2003 Yukon's interior
is new and improved, and the list of standard features is
long and impressive. An AM/FM CD/cassette player, tri-zone
automatic climate control, power steering, tilt leather-wrapped
steering wheel, cruise control and 6-way power front seats
with lumbar adjustment are just part of the package.
For options, the feature that stands out is a DVD entertainment
system, featuring a 7-inch flip-down screen, two wireless
(infrared) headphones, a wireless remote control and three
sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs.
Exterior Features
The Yukon boast a wheelbase of 116 inches, giving it a commanding
presence on the road. For 2003, a new four-position headlamp
switch allows drivers to turn off the daytime running lamps
and automatic headlamps for one ignition cycle, when necessary,
simply by reverse-rotating the headlamp switch.
Performance
The Yukon is no slouch, as it is given a 4.8-liter Vortec
V8 engine with 275 horsepower and 4-speed automatic transmission.
Standard electronic throttle control and new oxygen sensors
for all Vortec V8s improve drivability, fuel economy and
emissions. Oxygen sensors light off more quickly and only
draw current when needed.
An optional engine upgrade is available on 2003 Yukons,
hiking up the performance level of the SUV. The available
engine is a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 capable of 285 horsepower.
Safety and Security
The 2003 Yukon shows a definite commitment to safety. Four-wheel
disc, four-wheel antilock brakes with dual piston calipers
and Dynamic Rear Proportioning result in short stopping
distances. Also provided are a dual-stage, dual-level airbag
system and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children)
system for child seats.
