Today's 2003 GMC Sonoma is a competitive offering in the
tight race for sales in the compact pick-up class. One of
the key ingredients for this sector is choice, in styling,
capabilities and features and the Sonoma has the required
versatility in full measure. The Crew Cab and Extended Cab
are of particular interest as they offer consumers a big
part of that versatility. With Sportside or Fleetside and
short or long beds, with two doors or four, the larger Sonomas,
though still compact, can meet a wide variety of needs.
Available Models
The 4-door Sonoma Crew Cab differs from the 3 door Extended
Cabs in that they have full seating for 5 adult passengers
with a rear bench seat. Crew Cabs are offered in only 4WD
at the up-level SLS trim level. Extended Cabs have three
doors and a rear jump seat with the third door hinged at
the back. Extended Cabs are available in 2WD and 4WD, have
SL and SLS trim levels, and have an optional flared fender
Sportside Bed. A number of different truck-bed lengths are
also on offer, but these vary according to the Cab configuration.
For example, the longest, a 7.3ft bed, is only available
on the Regular Cab while the shortest, a 4.6ft bed, is mandatory
on the Crew Cab, which instead takes up the length to accommodate
passengers.
Interior Features
At the base SL trim-level consumers are offered many great
interior details. This is certainly not a bare bones vehicle.
Air conditioning and cloth upholstery combine with an AM/FM
radio and power steering, topping off the list of features.
A tachometer, automatic headlights, variable-intermittent
wipers and map lights add functionality to the standard
equipment list.
SLS trim levels include many more comfort and functional
features to the interior. Cruise control is standard at
this level, along with an AM/FM/CD stereo and a tilt leather-wrapped
steering wheel.
Exterior Features
The Sonomas have a variety of distinctive exterior features,
setting them apart from the mob by offering options for
a more sporty look for those who want it. Available flared-fender
Sportside beds combine with painted front bumper and rear
step bumper on the SL trim level, color keyed bumpers on
the SLS level. In addition, SLS adds front tow hooks and
235/75R15 on/off-road white-letter tires. The Crew Cab also
comes equipped with a standard bedliner.
Performance
The Sonoma offers any of three engine choices for the 2WD
Extended Cab. The smallest offering is the 2.2-liter 4-cyl.
engine capable of 120 horsepower at 5000rpm and 140lb-ft
of torque at 3600rpm. Optional on this configuration is
a larger engine, the middle option of the three. This V6
is a 4.3-liter capable of 180 horsepower at 4400rpm and
245lb-ft of torque at 2800rpm.
Very close to this is the V6 required to push the 4WD models
around. A powerful Vortec 4.3-liter V6 engine, it is capable
of 190 horsepower at 4400rpm and 250lb-ft of torque at 2800rpm.
This engine, with 4-speed automatic transmission gets 16/22
mpg (city/hwy) compared to, at the other end of the Sonoma
fuel economy scale, the 2WD 4-cyl. that gets 22/28 mpg using
the 5-speed manual transmission option that is available
with all three choices.
Different suspension systems are also available, including
the Smooth Ride or Increased Capacity Suspension Systems.
However, that is not all that is available mechanically
on the Sonoma line, 2-speed transfer case, front tow-hooks
and various trailer and hitch options can be selected.
Safety and Security
4-wheel antilock brakes and dual front airbags are standard
for Sonoma, as are daytime running lights, ABS disc brakes
standard on the Crew Cab SLS.
