Above the XL and XLT models, the uplevel Lariat and King
Ranch editions of the 2003 Ford F-150 add on the features
and step up the power. Like other F-150 models, the Lariat
and King Ranch are given a number of upgrades for the new
model year. Among them is a new insulation that dampens
noise, vibration and harshness to provide a quieter driving
experience. At 4,000 rpm, wide-open-throttle, the F-150's
interior is now more than 5 sones quieter. For work or play,
these models will certainly satisfy.
Available Models
The F-150 is available in 2-door Regular Cab, SuperCab (with
hinged back-doors) and 4-door SuperCrew Cab. For bed sizes,
Regular and SuperCabs have cargo beds of 6.5 or 8 ft; SuperCrews
use a 5.5-ft bed. The 6.5-ft bed comes in flat-side Styleside
form or as a flare-fender Flareside, while all other beds
are Styleside only. There are also two specialty models
available: Ford F-150 XVT Lightning and the Ford F-150 Harley
Davidson Edition.
Interior Features
Being at the upper end of the spectrum of F-150s, the Lariat
and King Ranch both have plenty of standard interior features.
In the former, air conditioning, cruise control and an AM/FM
CD player join a host of other equipment to add more comfort
to the ride. The top-line King Ranch offers such things
as leather upholstery, heated seats, captain chairs and
a 6-disc CD changer.
The F-150 SuperCrew Cab comes with a few extra features,
including standard power adjustable pedals, available power
moonroof and a functional bed extender. SuperCrew Cab models
also offer an available rear-seat entertainment package
option, with VHS player and video game outlets.
Exterior Features
Burgundy Red Clearcoat Metallic is a new exterior color
for 2003. A rear step bumper gives easy access to the cargo
area, while tie-down hooks on the cargo boxes help secure
cargo. A cargo light on the back of the cab is also standard.
Performance
The standard engine is a 4.6-liter V8 with 281 horsepower
at 4750 rpm and 293 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm. The specialty
models, the Ford F-150 XVT Lightning and the Ford F-150
Harley Davidson Edition, offer much more power. The 2-door
Regular Cab Lightning has a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 with
380 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm. The
Harley Davidson Edition comes with a 5.4-liter V8 with 340
horsepower and 350 lb-ft at 2500 rpm. All engines are available
with 4-speed automatic transmission, while the 4.6-liter
is also available with a 5-speed manual.
Safety and Security
The 2003 Ford F-150 is given dual front airbags and antilock
4-wheel disc brakes for safety. Side-door intrusion beams
help protect occupants in a side impact. The LATCH system
for child safety is also standard.
