When it comes to transportation, few vehicles can match
the ability of the 2003 Ford Econoline. The Wagon is just
one part of the equation, as it is flanked by an entire
commercial fleet of vehicles. While the commercial models
are designed to move large amounts of cargo, the Wagon does
the same for passengers. Able to handle from seven to fifteen
people, the Wagon is more like a tiny bus than anything
else.
Available Models
The Wagon comes in ½-ton E-150 and 1-ton E-350 chassis.
E-350s offer regular or extended-length bodies, while E-150s
come in regular length only. There are five different seating
configurations from which customers can choose. The Wagon
has center-opening rear cargo doors and either 60/40 doors
or a single sliding door on the passenger side. In addition,
two models are offered: XL and XLT.
Interior Features
The Wagon has spaciousness and the type of comfort features
to makes long rides a pleasure rather than a chore. Frame
and suspension improvements for 2003 smooth out the ride.
The XL model offers front air conditioning, power steering,
vinyl front bucket seats and a vinyl floor covering. The
XLT adds cloth upholstery, front captain chairs, front and
rear air conditioning and cruise control.
There are a number of options to improve the Wagon's ride
quality. A CD/AM/FM radio with six-disc capacity and six
speakers boosts the audio system, while an optional overhead
console adds some gadgets, including an outside air temperature
display, directional compass and storage/garage-door opener
holder.
Exterior Features
2003 Econolines are given a new look with a redesigned front
grille. It features an integrated Ford emblem and is molded
in color, textured and surrounds sealed-beam halogen headlamps.
A light charcoal bumper is standard on the XL Wagon, while
a chrome bumper with rubstrip is standard on the XLT Wagon.
Performance
The Wagon has enough available power to handle any load.
A grand total of five engines are offered, beginning with
the standard engine, a 4.2-liter V6 that features 191 horsepower
at 4800 rpm and 244 lb-ft of torque at 2750 rpm.
The first optional engine is a 4.6-liter V8 with 225 horsepower
at 4800 rpm and 286 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm. The second
is a 5.4-liter V8 with 255 horsepower at 4500 rpm and 350
lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm. Rounding out the lineup are
a 6.8-liter V10 with 305 horsepower at 4250 rpm and 420
lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm and a 7.3-liter turbo-diesel
V8 with 215 horsepower at 2600 rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque
at 1800 rpm. However, the last two are only available with
E-350 models.
Safety and Security
Safety is a major priority with the 2003 Econoline Wagon.
Dual front airbags are standard. Four-wheel antilock brakes
help provide steering control in hard-braking situations
and side-door intrusion beams add additional protection
in certain side collisions.
