The 2003 Ford Econoline Cutaway/Stripped Chassis models
have the type strength and durability perfect for commercial
jobs. Part of the massive fleet of Econolines, these two
model types continue to add to the four decades of tradition
for this full-size van. A chassis cab differs from a cutaway
in that the rear of the cab is enclosed. Both provide tremendous
spaciousness for cargo, and offer a variety of different
powertrain configurations to meet the needs of customers.
Available Models
The Econoline series bolsters its selection with every new
year. New for 2003 are the E-350/E-450/E-550 Chassis Cab
models, adding to the already available ¾-ton E-250
Stripped Chassis Cab. Introduced in spring 2002, the E-550
Super Duty is available as a cutaway or chassis cab in five
lengths, with wheelbases of 159.5, 177.5, 191.5, 209.5 and
233.5 inches.
Interior Features
Two vinyl buckets seats are placed up front, while the rest
of the room is reserved for cargo. It is primarily for heavy-duty
transportation that the Econoline Cutaway/Chassis Cab models
are designed for. At no extra charge, customers can equip
their vehicles with two different storage systems. An EconoCargo
System helps protect cargo with durable panels of high-density,
insulated polyethylene. The liner materials resist acids,
gasoline, salt, fertilizers, cleaners, insecticides and
many solvents. A Racks and Bins System is also offered.
Ideal for customers who must secure tools and parts, it
features fully installed steel shelving, drawers and cabinets,
and a full-width safety partition provides work area access
from the passenger compartment
Exterior Features
2003 Econolines are given a new look with a redesigned front
grille. It features an integrated Ford emblem and is molded
in color, textured and surrounds sealed-beam halogen headlamps.
The E-Series has aerodynamic styling that complements its
hard-working frame. Wraparound bumpers help protect front-end
sheet metal in minor impacts, while Merlot, Mineral Gray
and Silver Birch add to the color selection.
Performance
There is enough available power to handle any load. A grand
total of five engines are offered, each with different capabilities
in terms of performance. The standard engine is a 4.2-liter
V6 with 191 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 244 lb-ft of torque
at 2750 rpm.
The first optional engine upgrade is a 4.6-liter V8 with
225 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 286 lb-ft of torque at 3500
rpm. The second is a 5.4-liter V8 with 255 horsepower at
4500 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm. The last two
are not offered with E-250 models. They are a 6.8-liter
V10 with 305 horsepower at 4250 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque
at 3250 rpm and a 7.3-liter turbo-diesel V8 with 215 horsepower
at 2600 rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm.
Safety and Security
With side-door intrusion beams providing additional protection
in certain side collisions, the commercial fleet of the
Econoline series is very sturdily constructed to protect
all cargo, human and otherwise. Dual front airbags are standard,
while four-wheel antilock brakes handle hard-braking situations.
