The 2005 Lincoln Navigator is one of the largest and most
powerful vehicles on the road. It is also one of the most
luxurious, which is not really surprising considering its
history. The full-size SUV class was initially a utilitarian
segment and luxury took a back seat to versatility and ruggedness.
However, the Lincoln Navigator led the transformation of
this segment to become the new luxury vehicle for the rich,
famous and successful. And why not? It has power to be king
of the road (and off-road in a pinch), has massive passenger
and cargo capacity and, as is exemplified by the 2005 Lincoln
Navigator, it is a class chock full of interior innovation
and amenities.
Available Models
The 2005 Lincoln Navigator is presented in two model trims:
Luxury and Ultimate.
Interior Features
The interior mixes American burl walnut, premium leather
trim, satin nickel finishes and white light-emitting-diode
lighting to create a luxurious and contemporary cabin that
contains a list of major features too extensive to list
here. However, highlights include eight-way power driver's
and passenger's seat and fold-flat second and third-row
seats with leather seating surfaces, AM/FM audiophile sound
system with in-dash six-disc CD changer and dual electronic
automatic temperature control. The Ultimate truly is that,
adding heated and cooled front seats, power moonroof and
a power fold-flat third row seat.
The optional Lincoln Soundmark THX-Certified audio system
offers DVD-based navigation with voice activation, a touch-screen
system interface and an in-dash six-disc CD changer.
Exterior Features
Design changes for 2005 include new front fascia, standard
chrome grille, revised side cladding and running boards,
a new 18-inch chrome euro-flange wheel and new exterior
colours: Light Tundra, Charcoal Beige, Satellite Silver
and Vivid Red. High-intensity-discharge headlamps are now
available on all arrays. Optional on either Navigator trim
level are power-deployable running boards that automatically
extend the running board by 4 inches when a door opens.
Performance
A major change in the 2005 Navigator is this year's engine.
The new 3-valve engine is still a 5.4-liter V8 with 300
horsepower at 5000 rpm but this year it ups the torque by
10lb-feet with 365 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm. More radical
is the switch from 4-speed to 6-speed automatic transmission.
The new transmission powers the Navigator through its paces
more smoothly whether two or four-wheel drive.
With four-wheel independent suspension, rack-and-pinion
steering and a stiff frame, the big Navigator has surprising
agility. One of the useful gadgets on the new Navigator
is a fail-safe cooling feature, which allows the vehicle
to be driven temporarily if coolant loss is detected.
On top of the luxuries, the Navigator is also a cargo-carrying
and pulling powerhouse. A class III trailer hitch, 4-pin
connector, front and rear self-leveling suspension and,
with 4-wheel drive, a 2-speed transfer case is standard
on all models. The towing capacity is 8500lbs, a leader
in this class, while payload capacity is rated at 1540lbs
which seems a lot until you realize the actual cargo volume
is over 100 cubic feet! As is mentioned above, one of the
biggest and most powerful personal-use vehicles on the road
today or, in fact, ever.
Safety and Security
Safety is a priority for the Navigator. Standard safety
equipment includes antilock brakes with brake assist, dual
front and front and 2nd-row curtain airbags, antiskid and
rear-obstacle-detection system. An improved tire-pressure
monitoring system and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control
is now also standard.
