The biggest sport utility vehicle in America gets a bit
of model re-ordering, more standard features and additional
options for the new model year. Rumor has it that the Excursion
may be entering its last year of production, so if you've
had your eye on one but have never gone the distance, now
could be your last chance.
For 2004, power adjustable pedals are available on Eddie
Bauer and Limited models. An overhead console includes auxiliary
air conditioning controls, courtesy lights and bins for
a garage door opener and sunglasses. A second-row overhead
console also incorporates auxiliary climate controls.
Available Models
The entire 2004 Ford Excursion lineup consists of five models:
XLS, XLS Limo, XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited. XLS, XLS Limo
and XLT models are covered in a separate review.
Interior Features
The 2004 Ford Excursion has three rows that seat up to nine
adults. It is 2000 lbs heavier, 7.4 inches longer and 6
inches taller than its nearest competitor, the Chevrolet
Suburban. As a result, its interior volume and interior
space are best in the full-size SUV segment.
The 2004 Ford Excursion combines the design of a tailgate
and a lift-glass rear cargo into its Tri-Panel door system.
The door has a separate lift-glass for convenient small-parcel
loading and lightweight twin swing-out composite doors with
no visibility-blocking center pillar.
The Excursion's Limited trim is an extreme combination
of power, size and comfort. It features such standard items
as heated front seats, driver-seat and pedal memory, steering-wheel
climate and radio controls, an AM/FM radio with in-dash
6-disc CD changer and a universal garage-door opener.
Exterior Features
New heated telescoping trailer tow mirrors with integrated
turn signals and clearance lights are optional on all models.
The new color for this year is Pueblo Gold.
Performance
There are three different engines available for 2004, and
customers can choose whichever one their heart desires.
The first is a 5.3-liter V8. It has 255 horsepower at 4500
rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm. The second is a
6.8-liter V10 with 310 horsepower at 4250 rpm and 425 lb-ft
of torque at 3250 rpm.
The final engine is a 6.0-liter turbodiesel. Combined with
a 5-speed TorqShift automatic transmission, the diesel powertrain
delivers 325 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque-both best
in class. 2004 Excursions are offered in rear-wheel drive
or four-wheel drive configurations.
Safety and Security
Dual front airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and a rear
obstacle detection system are standard on both models.
