The V70 line of wagons provides the base platform for two
somewhat specialized and notable Volvo wagons; the 2003
Volvo XC70, previously known as the Cross Country, and the
sporty, performance-oriented V90 T5, a versatile and roomy
wagon with the heart and engine of a sports car.
Combining flexibility, longevity, comfort, handling, quality
and advanced safety, these near-luxury vehicles are designed
for families and individuals who want performance and road-handling
agility as well as seating for 7 (with optional child booster
seats) or storage for 71.5 cubic feet of cargo.
Available Models
The two models described here have very different design
priorities but similar trim levels. This overview describes
the sporty T5 and the ultimate active-lifestyle vehicle,
the all-wheel-drive XC70 (AKA the Cross Country). The V70
line also has three other entries, the V70 2.4, the V70
2.4T and V70 2.5T AWD, that are described in a separate
overview.
Interior Features
These two wagons have slightly different interior and exterior
features to present offerings in line with their capabilities.
For example, the V70 T5 has vinyl elements in the upholstery
while the XC70 is all cloth. Other than that, the touring-oriented
T5 has an 8-way power passenger seat, a trip computer and
an automatic day/night rearview mirror. In contrast the
XC70 has heated seats, rain-sensing wipers and a raised
ride height, in response to the likelihood that it will
see more adverse terrain and driving conditions.
Dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, power
windows, heated power mirrors, remote keyless entry, memory
settings and a an Alpine audio system with Dolby Pro Logic
are all on the extensive list of comfort details they share.
Exterior Features
The exterior of two wagons also reflect their different
identities and capabilities. The sporty T5 features low
profile 215/55HR16 tires, alloy wheels and a lower, more
ground hugging stance. The XC70 has a raised ride height,
roof rails, bigger 215/65HR16 tires and durable, dent-resistant
body side cladding. Both vehicles feature fully integrated
fog lights.
Performance
These two cars are most distinguished by their different
performance and drivetrain profiles. The XC90 is a capable
and brawny all-wheel drive with a 2.5-liter turbocharged
5-cylinder engine that is able to produce 208 hp at 5000
rpm and 236 lb-ft of torque at 1500, ideal for towing ability.
It comes coupled with a 5-speed automatic transmission and
gets a respectable 20/27 mpg (city/hwy).
The V70 T5, in contrast, is a high-pressure 2.3-liter turbocharged
5-cylinder with 247 hp at 5200 rpm and 243 lb-ft of torque
at 2400. It can be equipped with either a 5-speed automatic
or a sport-tuned 5-speed manual transmission and it gets
21/28 mpg. It comes with an antiskid control system.
Safety and Security
The V70 line contains the top-of-the-line in Volvo safety
and are touted to be the safest wagons they have ever built
with extensive and comprehensive active and passive safety
technology as standard equipment on all models.
