The 2003 Hyundai Accent is a deceiving vehicle. It is inexpensive
in dollars only. In other words, the Accent does not behave
like the bottom-dollar economy car that its low price tag
implies. It's much better than that, with sophisticated
mechanical equipment and comfortable set of amenities.
The Accent is the smaller of Hyundai's two subcompact cars.
The 3-door Accent is really a traditional hatchback, with
the third door referring to the large trunk opening that
is provided.
Available Models
The 2003 Hyundai Accent 3-door hatchback coupe is offered
in a base trim and a GL trim, with a GT package available
as well. The 4-door Accent is covered in a separate review.
Interior Features
The 2003 Hyundai Accent 3-door can sit up to five passengers,
although it would be a stretch to fit three full-size adults
in the rear. However, with four it's not a problem at all.
The base trim is a bare-bones model. It provides a few necessary
features and offers air conditioning as optional equipment.
More features are provided as you move up the line. The
GL has standard air conditioning and a digital clock, with
power everything and a CD player two enticing options available.
At the top of the line, the GT package adds a white-face
instrumentation cluster and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Exterior Features
The sporty package of the top-line GT model further distinguishes
itself with its exterior style. The GT features 14-inch
alloy wheels, side sill moldings, a rear spoiler and front
fog lamps.
Performance
One capable engine drives the 2003 Hyundai Accent 3-door,
regardless of trim levels. It is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder
model with 104 horsepower. Both 4-speed automatic transmission
and 5-speed manual are available. The Accent is also quite
economical, with very good fuel ratings to save the old
pocketbook.
The front-wheel drive Accent 3-door has a solid, fully
independent suspension system that absorbs the impact of
potholes and other bumps on the road. With the GT, this
is upgraded to a more advanced sport suspension configuration.
Safety and Security
Dual front airbags, protective bodyside moldings, capable
brakes and front seat belt pretensioners with force limiters
are all part of the standard safety and security package.
